Hey, it’s Karen!

I’m not sure how you found your way here, but I’m glad you did. For whatever reason you’d like to learn more about me here’s what I think you should prolly know — I have spent the better part of 20 years helping to build community where I could. How? Great question — via events, programs, storytelling, collaborations, and the occasional charitable drinking club. After a break, which I’m happy to explain, I’m back at the table and looking to do something that matters.

Thread City Hop Fest

The Thread City Hop Fest started in 2014 when a very well-intentioned brewer who shan’t be named may, or may not, have overcommitted to a half-marathon organizing team. Instead of a beer for every runner, and with very little time, a beer fest was born. I launched it and ran it through 2020 when I stepped away. It remains something I am very proud of. Over the years since it launched, the Hop Fest has brought together 60+ brewers, thousands of attendees, and the best part is that to date it has raised over $284,000 for local organizations.

Books & Brews

Books & Brews was a no-brainer collaboration between Willibrew and the Willimantic Public Library. A book club run by the library and hosted at the restaurant. The event continues to this day, but what’s not to like about getting together with friends to talk about a book you’re reading, enjoy a beverage and a bite to eat?

Crafty

Crafty was another opportunity for Willibrew to team up with their neighbors either in the restaurant or in their shops. Participants got to enjoy Willibrew food and drink while learning something new and getting to know the downtown Willimantic neighborhood. We painted, decorated cupcakes, tie-dyed t-shirts, made jewelry, and Christmas wreathes. The event continues to this day with a different name, which I think just goes to say we’re never too old to have a little fun.

Spirit of the Season Holiday Giveaway

The Spirit of the Season Holiday Giveaway was my spin on a more traditional shopping passport promotion where shoppers collect stamps. It kicked off on Small Business Saturday and ran for several days. Shoppers visiting participating businesses would be asked to fill out a card with their name and contact info, nominate a downtown business they loved, as well as a local charitable organization. At the end we chose three shoppers who won a variety of really great gifts and gift cards, the local media donated advertising packages for the winning merchants, and the chosen charitable organizations received cash donations. It may have been my idea but it was embraced by local banks and community foundations that funded it.

FILL-anthropic

FILL-anthropic was my charitable drinking club. It came to me when I was volunteering for the local emergency shelter and trying to fundraise. Often I’d ask people if they could make a cash donation and they felt that a small amount wouldn’t be helpful. But I knew that a lot of small donations add up, so I came up with the idea of asking for just $5 — the price of a beer at the time. We met on the 2nd Wednesdays of the month, chose local organizations, and raised over $8,000 doing it. FILL ran from 2010 to 2015 when I had to step away.

Where I’ve Been

For nearly a decade I was the Marketing Coordinator at Willimantic Brewing Company. It was a good fit — a community-minded place that gave me room to do work I cared about for a business I loved. Events, collaborations, and marketing — traditional and social — are all things I enjoyed then and continue to enjoy today.

Before and alongside that I served on the boards of Willimantic Renaissance and Thread City Development, where I helped launch the Willimantic Downtown brand and had the opportunity to cheerlead Willimantic to residents and visitors alike through marketing and events.

This is some of what I’ve done but in my life I’ve also had the opportunity to volunteer at, work for, and serve on the board of a local emergency shelter. I’ve worked at a real estate agency, owned a coffee house, been a bookseller on Martha’s Vineyard, and sold toys in Seattle. All this to say my skills are as varied as my interests.

Throughout the years I have been actively involved with Willimantic’s 3rd Thursday Street Fest, primarily as Marketing Coordinator — a role I recently stepped back into for the 2024-2025 seasons.

What I know how to do

I know how to tell a story about a place or a community in a way that makes people feel connected to it. That’s probably the thing I’m best at and the thread that runs through most of what I’ve done.

I know how to write in a way that is conversational — press releases, social posts, radio copy, event copy.

I know how to see an idea through from idea to finished product. I know the value of partnerships and collaboration to secure not only funding but community support. I have done this more times than I can count and look forward to doing it again.

I understand the value of using social media with intention rather than just yelling out into the void hoping someone will hear. Social media is another form of community building and I know the difference between creating content to build community and creating content that just takes up space.

I continuously am learning new things either to add on to what I know or just to branch out. Currently that includes WordPress, design, Adobe Illustrator, and some AI too.
